Opeth - Blackwater Park - 2001

Opeth - Blackwater Park - 2001

Blackwater Park rhymes with highwater mark, and that’s precisely what this album is, not only for Death Metal, but also for Metal more generally. The album bottles genius and invites you to drink up. Lavish and lush textures are woven into its tapestry of beauty meets beast. Given the brilliance of this album it is depressing to think about the absolute travesty of noodling, artsy-fartsy, wankery that Opeth has become. But we’ll always have Blackwater Park, which Åkerfeldt’s newfound love for retro sunglasses, pimp hats, and bell-bottoms can never take away from us.
